It had been a mistake not investing in a good set of drapes, James decided, as the morning sun slid into his eyes, despite his best efforts to screw them shut. Frowning, he sat up and reached across to the night stand to check what the time was apart from 'far too early'.

Unfortunately, the problem with expensive watches like his was that they all too often had a date feature. Which made cheerful repression just that much more harder. Still frowning, he kept staring at the watch.

"I'm not becoming a school teacher again," James replied, leaning over to kiss her. "If we do this."

"Where would we go?" Vesper asked quietly, her voice cracking. "Where could we go?"

"What do you mean?" Bond asked, not willing to let go of this idea, this slightest scrap of hope just yet.

"We can't go back to my world, reality, whatever," she said, curling in on herself. "I'm dead in yours. And that's just to begin with."

James slid his arms around her. "We can work through that," he replied softly. "Somehow."

Vesper shook her head. "We can't," she insisted. "Not unless you plan on spending the rest of our lives hiding from MI6 or Mr White's group. There's enough overlap."

He had been trying quite hard not to think about that. There was more than a hint of desperation in his voice as he answered with "We can fix it. Take them down."

"We both know it doesn't work like that," Vesper said. "Not with the kind of people we'd be up against."

"I don't want you to go," he said. "I don't care about the rest of it, just that."

"And I don't want to leave either," Vesper told him. "But I don't know that we have any way of getting what we want."

"Look, the tournament's not even over yet," James tried, not willing to give up just yet. "We can talk about it after, you never know what might happen."

Vesper nodded lying back down. "After the tournament," she agreed. "I don't know what difference it'll make though."

James joined her, curling against her side. "Maybe all the difference in the world," he suggested with an optimism he didn't really feel.

"Maybe," Vesper agreed dubiously.

Not that they were ever going to get the chance to have that conversation, thanks to the efforts of those attacking special collections.
