18 Apocalypse Avenue, Saturday Morning

As he stood in the kitchen, looking through the fridge, Bond's main concern was that the coffee had finally started working properly again and he was feeling distinctly less zombie-like than he had during the week.

This might have had a lot to do with why he was humming as he started preparing ingredients.

Of course, if he'd been aware of some of the scenes happening right outside, he mightn't have had quite as cheerful a demeanour.

Having asked enough questions of various locals to find where Da was living, Jules rapped on the door, leaning against the frame while he waited for it to open.

Bond paused mid-chop when he heard the door, carefully putting down the knife and going to open it. "Hello?"

Jules looked up at him. "Morning Da," he chirped.

Bond blinked, staring wordlessly at the boy.

"Da?" Jules repeated slowly, wondering just what was wrong with Da. "Is Mum about?"

"Mum?" Bond repeated, feeling a lot like someone had just bashed him over the head with a tyre-iron. "Who are you?"

"Yeah, Mum, you call her Vesper?" Jules supplied helpfully. Maybe Da'd finally cracked, Mum always said it was a possibility, given his emotional retardation and all. Not that Jules was supposed to tell anyone she'd said that. "I'm Jules, remember?"

Bond stared at Jules for several more seconds looking for (and seeing) the resemblance.

Then quickly shut the door in his face.

After all, it really wouldn't do to let the child see him hyperventilating.

Jules blinked, then started pounding on the door. "Oy, Da!" he yelled. "Have you gone mental or something?"

After his breathing had returned to normal, Bond opened the door again, seemingly unruffled.

"The stove caught fire," he lied, much less easily than usual. "I had to put it out."

"I'm afraid your mother isn't here right now," he added, since that seemed better than 'she's dead, I checked'. "Did you want to come inside?"

"You cooking then?" Jules asked, coming inside before Da decided to get all door slammy again. He decided not to mention that he couldn't smell smoke.

"I'd been planning to before I got interrupted," Bond replied dryly, with a significant look in Jules's direction.

If Jules noticed the look it made absolutely no impact on him. "Eggs?" he asked hopefully. "You know I like eggs."

"I don't actually," Bond muttered, too quietly for Jules to hear as he steered him into the kitchen, then louder. "As a matter of fact, yes, I was cooking eggs."

"I can help," Jules told him helpfully. Maybe now that Da had gone insane he'd be less of a kitchen tyrant.

Not so much, no. "You're going to sit out of the way, watch, and not touch anything unless I say you can."

Jules scowled. "But Da!"

"I mean it young man," Bond said flatly, before blinking and wondering where the hell that'd come from. The fact he hadn't also threatened to tell the boy's mother was no relief, either, since he was most definitely Not Thinking about that.

"Fine," Jules grumbled, settling in to watch Da as he started cooking again. "I'm telling Mum though."

"You can tell her whatever you'd like," Bond replied, ignoring the twisting in his chest in favour of wondering if he could trick Jules into attaching himself to Aravis.
